Barcelona winger Anthony Gordon rejected the notion that Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are better than his team, despite losing to both in their last two encounters, affirming the Catalan team's ability to outperform any opponent, and emphasizing the need for players to take responsibility for the two setbacks and learn from their mistakes before facing new challenges against the continent's giants.
Gordon's comments came on Monday following Barcelona's 2-4 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital on October 20, and then their defeat to arch-rivals Real Madrid 1-2 in the La Liga clásico on the 25th of the same month, marking the team's first two losses under their German coach Hansi Flick this season.
The English player told reporters: “I don’t think they are better than us. We have to take responsibility for the two defeats, as they were the two biggest matches we have played so far this season and we lost them, but I don’t see them having the upper hand over us,” adding, “We are a great team, and we can beat any opponent on any day.”
Gordon attributed part of the loss to Paris Saint-Germain to the fatigue experienced by Barcelona players, noting that the French team had a physical advantage after their coach rested his entire lineup in their domestic match over the weekend, whereas Barcelona did not have the same opportunity.
He explained: “We were very tired during the match, and I think Paris had a significant advantage because of that,” but he also stressed that these circumstances do not absolve his team from responsibility for the result.
Speaking about the clásico, Gordon went further, considering that Barcelona was the better side and deserved to come away with all three points, despite Real Madrid sealing the match with a late goal from Frenchman Kylian Mbappé, capitalizing on defensive mistakes that cost the home side the game.
He said: “The Madrid match is the most important one for us, and we should have won. We were the better team by a large margin, we had possession of the ball most of the time, and we created the most dangerous chances, but we didn’t reach our best levels, and that ultimately cost us after conceding two very poor goals.”
He added that facing opponents with top-class players makes mistakes costly, affirming that Barcelona will learn from both experiences, and he looks forward to new matches against these teams to prove their capabilities.
Gordon's statements come at a time when Barcelona is seeking to regain its balance after a decline in results following an ideal start during which they maintained an unbeaten record. The team currently sits in third place in La Liga, while leading their group in the Champions League by a single point over their closest rivals.
Barcelona will host English side Aston Villa on Tuesday in the Champions League, looking to get back to winning ways before visiting Atlético Madrid on Sunday in a highly anticipated match in La Liga.
