في الوقت الذي تحوّلت أسطح المطابخ الحجرية إلى رمزٍ للأناقة والحداثة داخل المنازل الأمريكية، خرج تحذير صحي صادم من ولاية ماساتشوستس ليكشف الوجه الخفي لهذا الجمال. فقد أعلنت السلطات الصحية تسجيل أول حالة مؤكدة لمرض رئوي قاتل، يرتبط بالعمل اليومي مع أنواع معينة من الحجر، ما يفتح باب القلق أمام عمّال لم يتخيلوا أن مصدر رزقهم قد يتحول إلى تهديد لحياتهم.

وقالت مديرية الصحة العامة في ماساتشوستس، إن المريض رجل يبلغ من العمر 40 عاماً عمل في صناعة أسطح المطابخ الحجرية لمدة 14 عاماً، وتم تشخيصه بداء «السيليكوز»، وهو مرض رئوي يهدد الحياة.

وأوضح التقرير أن المريض كان يعمل في تقطيع وصقل وتلميع أسطح المطابخ الحجرية؛ ما يؤدي إلى توليد غبار يحتوي على جزيئات السيليكا البلورية، واستنشاق هذا الغبار يؤدي إلى تندب الرئتين وتطور المرض بشكل قاتل.

ويصعب علاج داء «السيليكوز» بعد الإصابة، وتتمثل أعراضه في السعال المستمر، وألم الصدر، وضيق التنفس، والإرهاق الدائم.

كما قد يتسبب في مضاعفات خطيرة تشمل سرطان الرئة، والسل، وحتى الوفاة.

وشددت المديرية على أهمية تهيئة ظروف عمل آمنة واتباع إجراءات السلامة عند التعامل مع أسطح المطابخ الحجرية، مشيرة إلى أن معظم الحالات ترتبط بالنشاط المهني.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health stated that the patient is a 40-year-old man who has worked in the stone countertop industry for 14 years and has been diagnosed with "silicosis," a life-threatening respiratory disease.

The report explained that the patient was involved in cutting, grinding, and polishing stone countertops, which generates dust containing crystalline silica particles, and inhaling this dust leads to lung scarring and the development of the disease in a fatal manner.

Treating "silicosis" after infection is difficult, and its symptoms include persistent cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, and constant fatigue.

It can also lead to serious complications, including lung cancer, tuberculosis, and even death.

The department emphasized the importance of creating safe working conditions and following safety procedures when handling stone countertops, noting that most cases are related to occupational activities.
